Choosing a photographer for your event
Useful photography begins with deciding what you want to remember: spontaneous reactions, conversations, a performance or a few family portraits. That brief is more helpful than simply requesting lots of pictures.
Look at a complete event story
Ask to see a full gallery from a similar occasion, rather than a selection of highlights from different jobs. Notice movement, faces in changing light and small details. Discuss how often the photographer directs people and when the family could gather for a portrait. At a children’s party, short agreed pauses for photographs help the activities keep moving. Mention limited space or unusual lighting before the day rather than leaving it as a surprise.
Agree on coverage and delivery
List the moments that matter: arrivals, birthday wishes, a favourite game, the cake or a final group picture. Confirm attendance hours, file format, delivery method and editing timescale. Discuss any proposed portfolio use separately, especially when children appear in the photographs. Share a short running order and the contact for the person coordinating the event. Schedule changes can then be communicated without searching through the guests for an organiser.
